Workshop in Portland | IFVP AI discussion

Updates from Emily

I'm evolving! I'm stepping away from teaching online classes (for now) and I'm exploring new ways to work, teach, and express myself. I don't have a destination yet, but this is the place to come along on my journey as I figure it out.

Learn from the best!

3-day workshop | Nov 11-13th | Portland, OR

Update! The incredible Heather Martinez is slated to teach alongside myself and Brian at our visual workshop in Portland, OR. This workshop is for learning (and improving!) graphic recording skills, leading and facilitaing visually, and lettering for fantastic charts. I hope to see you there!

Questions? Just respond to this email and I'd be happy to chat more.

Let's talk about AI!

Later this month I'm facilitating a discussion on AI as a visual practitioner. Unfortunately it's only open to to IFVP members. If you're a member, you can RSVP here. If you're not familiar with IFVP, it's the professional organization for graphic recorders and visual facilitators, and I serve on the board as the marketing co-chair. If you have any questions about joining, just reply and I'd be happy to chat! You can learn more and join IFVP here. ($175/year)

Life

If you've been opening my emails lately, you know that I've been challenged a lot by my own limiting beliefs. Now that it's been highlighted, I'm often running into areas of life where I've kept myself small or told myself I wasn't capable of something. One of those things is bike commuting!

I have 2 main excuses for NOT commuting on my bike:

  1. It's too hard (hills suck when you're asthmatic)
  2. I will be gross when I arrive. I sweat a lot and don't have an e-bike... it's all pedal power!

I've been challenging these excuses and commuting by bike to more places over the past week. I went to 3 coffee meetings, a group gathering, my PT appointment, and a networking event all on my bike! Yesterday was my biggest bike commuting day with a total of 9 miles.

Here's what I learned with my experiment:

  1. There are some things I just don't want to bike to. I probably won't ever go to a meeting or networking event on a bike because I want to present myself more professionally.
  2. I can do more than I thought. A bike commuting friend showed me some routes that aren't as hilly. I proved to myself that I can cross town on my bike without stopping.
  3. Biking is now an option! In a car, it takes 20 minutes or less to get anywhere in Bend from my house (it's a small town). It does take longer on my bike, but not by much. If the weather's nice and I don't have to look nice, biking is now a possibility where it wasn't before.

Until next time,

Journey Before Destination

Hey there! I'm Emily Mills. A lot of people know me as an expert in visual notetaking, but I'm currently evolving and discovering new ways to work, teach, and creatively express myself. This newsletter is now my public "work-in-progress" to discover what's next.
