Updates from Emily: A Week in Boise

Updates from Emily

In case you missed previous messages, I'm evolving! SketchAcademy.com is still online, but I'm exploring new ways to work, teach, and express myself. I don't have a destination yet, but you're welcome to come along on the journey as I figure it out!

A Week in Boise

Last week I spent 6 days in Boise participating in a mastermind event and attending a conference. It's a long time to be away from home and not working, but very necessary. It's VITAL to get out of your bubble and get challenged so you can return with a new fire to make changes and get to work.

Here's my biggest takeaway from the week: I've built a lot of ceilings over my head. Even if I broke through one cieling, another would be waiting. I limited myself over and over. Practically, this has looked like:

  • Only dreaming as far as I can see
  • Going for what I know is achievable, not what's possible
  • Thinking with a lens of cynicism instead of hope
  • Placing pressures on myself that are based on possible disaster, not current reality

This mindset was a means of self-protection, but I never needed it and it's not serving me now... It's time to dream bigger and think more expansively than I have in my whole life!

What's Next:

As I return to the office this week, I'm wanting to do things differently. I can't go back to the way things were. After I catch up on the mountains of tasks and emails that come with being gone for a week, I'll be hiring myself as a facilitator. I'll use my skills and training to guide myself through a discovery process, a narrowing process, and creating a vision map. I do this for clients professionally, so why not do it for me, too?! I'll be busting out my flipcharts, stickies, and markers and facilitating my way forward. I'll likely be documenting this process, so stay tuned on my socials to see how it goes!

I've already been on a journey of healing and pursuing wholeness: I'm in regular counseling, exercise regularly, see specialists for conditions, and have been taking new classes. This mind expansion piece is just the next step in my personal and business evolution. To paraphrase one of the conference speakers, "If you're not choosing to change, you're choosing to stay the same."

Here's what I want the future to look like:

  • More experiements, less all-in behaviors.
  • Taking a stand, sharing more opinions and POVs... and being willing to be wrong in public.
  • Share what I'm learning and who I'm meeting

On that note...

I'd love to introduce you to my friend PJ Milani! Teacher by day and visual metaphor creator by night, he has a cohort course called Thinking in Visual Metaphors. It's everything you need to create visuals that get saved, shared, and remembered in 3 weeks! Transform how you think and translate your ideas into visual metaphors that make complexity instantly clear.

The next cohort is starting soon, and PJ was gracious enough to share a $100 promo code! Use EMILY100 for $100 off your registration. I wanted you to know about this course 1) because it's a really helpful skill for sketchnoters and graphic recorders, and 2) PJ is such a genuinely great guy and teacher... I know you'd enjoy this 3 week program starting on June 23rd!

That's all for now! Have a great week,

Emily

p.s. I also had some fun time in Boise riding my MTB the foothills! Beautiful weather and views.... awful uphill climbs for this asthmatic! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Journey Before Destination

Hey there! I'm Emily Mills. A lot of people know me as an expert in visual notetaking, but I'm currently evolving and discovering new ways to work, teach, and creatively express myself. This newsletter is now my public "work-in-progress" to discover what's next.
